It was over a year ago that we went into lockdown. It was over a year ago that I dug out the sloping garden with a spade and a hearty smile. So this was the process:
It was a case of digging out the sloping lawn by hand to start with. 
All dug out, sleepers installed, lawn levelled behind sleepers, grass seed down and makeshift scarecrow erected. 
Starting to build the Pergola. 
This first wood construction was HEAVY! 
First two sides put up. We needed a third adult to help here – thanks, Hans. 
We were going to need a third person to lift this into the holes for poles I dug. 
With collection of free gravel (twice) and some “postcrete” the batons under the decking were levelled, and quality controlled… thanks, Tash. 
I knew there had to be a better use for these dumbass covid testers… they were the perfect 0.5 cm spacers we needed to put down the decking. 
Everyone involved… I’ll go and get the teas on then… 
And there we are. Pond still to do, but nearly there now. 
Temporary roof covering on and corner supports still to do. 
Leftover decking used to make a recycling (multiple plastic boxes) hider. 
And relax…
So some good came out of the lockdowns. I wonder how many others have up-levelled their spaces due to lockdown? This was a true family build – all equally involved from start to finish!
And six months later we have just about got there with the garden and the build. Here are the results… a lovely place to sit and do whatever…
